In 1984, aluminum giant Alcoa joined forces with Fujikura Ltd. of Japan to form Alcoa Fujikura Ltd., with Alcoa holding majority ownership. Two divisions - AFL Automotive and AFL Telecommunications were created. AFL Automotive manufactures electrical distribution systems and components for the automotive industry. AFL Telecommunications is a world leader in providing fiber optic products, engineering expertise and integrated services to the telecommunications industry.

Headquartered in Nashville, Tenn., AFL Telecommunications initially focused on the manufacture of Optical Ground Wire and accessories for the electric utility communication networks. Today, we offer telecommunications products and services including fiber optic cable, conductor accessories, splicing systems, test and measurement equipment, fiber management systems, fiber optic components and interconnect products, photonics and Engineering and Installation services.

Over the years, AFL Telecommunications has grown from 50 employees to more than 2,500 employees with revenues of more than $350 million and locations throughout the U.S., Mexico and United Kingdom.

1987 Introduced first fusion splicers
1991 Qualified as a supplier for connectorized cable with IBM
1991 Houston, Miss. connector manufacturing plant established
1992 Superior Optics acquired - ADSS and premise line offered
1997 Entered services business with acquisition of SixR
1998 MinTel service company acquired
1998 Quality Control Systems (QCS) service company acquired
1998 Allentown, Penn. Photonics manufacturing plant established
1999 Tele-Tech service company acquired
1999 Monterrey, Mexico manufacturing plant established
2000 Noyes Fiber Systems acquired, expanding product base to include test and measurement equipment
2000 50,000 km of Optical Ground Wire manufactured
2000 Aster division of Thomas & Betts acquired to support Photonics business
2000 AtPac service company acquired
2000 Focas acquired, expanding cable operations to Alpharetta, GA and Swindon, U.K.
2001 ISAC service company acquired
2001 Laser Armor Tech acquired to support growth of optical ground wire
2001 Enter wireless market through acquisition of Pacific 17
2002 IVCI service company acquired
2002 Acquired Keptel division of Arris Corporation
2003 Acquired Mericom to enhance Wireless Service offerings
